Watch a stop motion video made entirely in Snapchat

snapchat_stop_motion

MysteryGuitarMan decided to make a stop motion video. Sounds pretty standard. Oh. You want to know the catch? MysteryGuitarMan filmed his crazy clip entirely in Snapchat.

The video description explains that creating the video only required three components: “some fruits, Snapchat, and a LOT of free time.” Unfortunately, I only have the first one, and even if I were to get back on Snapchat, I seriously doubt I'll ever have enough of the third component.

But it's the catchy music that particularly draws me in, almost to the point that I wish this was a real game I could play on my phone:

The vertical video is really my only complaint, though I'm told that this is just the way Snapchat is. It turns out you can film and send horizontal videos in the app, but no one does this.

Also, Snapchat doesn't have any built-in games. If this doesn't inspire the team, I'm not sure what will.

3 (Seasoned) Tips to Starting a Part Time Business as a Social Media Manager

starting a business as a social media manager

One of my passions is helping people start a part time business as a social media manager.  Because that's how I started and I think it can be such a great way for moms (or dads) to stay home with their kids and provide some extra income to the family.

On our recent #SocialTalkLIVE video we talked about some of the keys to starting a part time business as a social media manager or consultant and working out of the home.  It's a challenge sometimes!

If you are not familiar with our SocialTalkLIVE show, we like to have a little fun.  It's Friday afternoon and we wear hats and wigs and get a little silly while talking about serious topics.

This week I was calling in from my family's house in Chicago and luckily I was able to borrow one of my mom's wigs – so now you know where I got it from.

Here are the major points we covered.

Tip #1 Understand your schedule and create your boundaries

When you have children at home and you are trying to work on the side, it's challenging.  I know when my kids were small, I only had nap times and some odd moments here and there to get things done.

So there was a lot of evening work and when I did have time, I had to be extremely focused at what I did.

A calendar management system helps.  Schedule your time and don't get distracted with other issues that crop up.  Also use good tools to help you save time.

Phyllis has a great system around using your Google Calendar to really focus your time called Timebliss.me.

Google calendar

Obviously when you are starting out part time, you can't get quite as much into your day.  But making your kids a priority first helps you focus on your own priorities later when you need to get things done.  I share a few stories about that in the video recording.

Tip #2 Figure out your niche and work in your passion!

When you niche you will naturally attract new clients.  We talked about 3 ways to niche:

  • Industry – health care, authors, restaurants, etc.

  • Platform – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

  • Skill – social ads, image creation, blogging, analytics

3 ways to niche

One of our students from Social Media Manager School, Janet Kennedy, has done a great job niching into the Health Care business and focusing on social media.  She started her business part time and it has grown tremendously with a new podcast Get Social Health and she has become a real go-to expert in her field.

Get Social Health

Tip #3 Work with people you love – especially since you have limited time!

Make sure you are working with the right customers who respect and appreciate what you do.  It's important to find the right clients as a social media manager since you have limited time.

If a client isn't a right fit for you, it's ok to say so.

We live in an exciting time.  We can create a business that fits our schedule, working from home, and being with our kids!  I wrote a post about why I do what I do – even with the late nights, some guilt, and some frustration – it's totally worth it.

KLM now uses Facebook Messenger for boarding passes, flight info, and customer service

Facebook Messenger

Facebook and KLM airlines have formally announced a partnership that will allow KLM customers to receive flight confirmations, boarding cards, reminders, flight status updates, and ask questions directly through the Facebook Messenger app.

At its F8 developer conference last year, the social networking giant first unveiled plans to expand Messenger beyond a simple messaging app and into a platform - one that can be used to power and underpin a myriad of third-party services. Retailers Everlane and Zulily were among the first partners announced, though it was later revealed that KLM would be added to the mix too.

The KLM rollout kicks off today, though it hasn't revealed in what markets and to whom - though Messenger chief David Marcus did confirm that it would be available globally “in the coming days and weeks.”

Facebook is launching universal Windows apps for Instagram, Messenger, and its core service

Microsoft executive vice president of the Windows and Devices Group Terry Myerson on stage at the Build 2016 developer conference in San Francisco, Calif. on March 30, 2016

Facebook will soon launch new universal apps for not only its core service, but also Instagram, and Messenger. In addition, the social networking company is extending its Facebook Audience Network and App Install SDK to developers on the Windows platform.

On stage at the Build developer conference, Microsoft executive vice president for Windows and Devices group Terry Myerson announced the latest Facebook news as he touted the growing adoption of the Windows app store and ecosystem. He revealed that there has been more than 5 billion visits to the Windows Store.

By releasing apps for the Windows platform, Facebook is ensuring that its social network, photo-sharing app, and messaging service are more broadly available regardless of what device you're using, be it smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Reports of a Windows 10 version of Facebook Messenger popped up in the Microsoft Store earlier this month, but the only details that were apparent is that you could download it “soon.”

For developers, being able to tap into Facebook across all platforms can be invaluable. Thus perhaps the reason why Facebook is extending its Audience Network and mobile app install SDK, It will not only give developers more ways to monetize their apps, but give millions of Facebook advertisers greater reach, especially when you factor out the devices someone is using.

Facebook's Audience Network debuted at the company's own F8 developer conference in 2014. It's a mobile ad network that lets advertisers bid and manage their marketing to a targeted group. You can choose to have a banner ad, interstitial, native, link ads, and even app install ads.

We've reached out to Facebook for additional comment and will update if we hear back.

This is developing. Please refresh for updates.

Instagram now lets you share 60-second videos

Watching a video on Instagram using an Android device.

Instagram has begun rolling out a update that lets you record longer videos on the media-sharing application. Starting today, you'll be able to post videos as long as 60 seconds, an increase from the 15 seconds you had before. It'll be available on both iOS and Android, but only a small group will have this capability to start, including both verified and nonverified users. Instagram said that it will be rolling out to everyone “in the coming months.”

As more people opt to use video to express their moments, Instagram, along with its parent company Facebook, are diving deeper into this space to give people what they want. Advertisers were the first to see the increase as Instagram allowed them to create 60-second video ads, with brands like T-Mobile and Warner Bros. taking advantage of it ahead of Super Bowl 50.

Nearly three years ago, Instagram added support for videos, with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying, “We're really just getting started with this product.” At the time, you could upload 15-second clips and apply one of 13 filters to make your video stand out.

“When I think about what Instagram is, I think about moments … at our core visual imagery is everything,” said Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom at the time. “Our mission is to capture and share the world's moments, and we live that every single day.”

Over time, the company released improvements for the service, including more filters and a slow-motion capability. It has also added video view counts to posts, so instead of just seeing how many people liked your video, you'll know how many actually watched it, essentially further rivaling Twitter's Vine app. To reinforce its belief in the future of video, in October, Instagram debuted a Twitter Moments-like video channel that showcases curated footage and photos from users around specific events.

At first, limiting videos to 15 seconds was an effort to get people right to the point so they could share their experiences succinctly. But by increasing that length up to a minute, this gives users the ability to tell more of their story - something that may have been an issue of concern previously. It also strengthens Facebook's tools to take on YouTube as the video leader of the Internet.

Facebook Delivery Insights Will Help Marketers Get More Value From Ads (Plus How Ads Get Shown On Facebook)

Facebook is introducing Delivery Insights to its Ads Manager tools. Delivery Insights will tell advertisers how their ads are competing at auction and provide recommendations on how to tweak ads to make them more competitive.

The social network delivers ads to its users based on bid price, ad quality and user interest,  evaluating billions of pairings of individual people and individual ads each day, looking for the right mix of message relevance and potential business value.

According to Facebook, the new feature identifies under-delivering ad sets and explains why the under-delivery is happening and highlights suggestions for specific actions an advertiser can take to make their ad more competitive at auction – in-turn helping them to increase the performance of their advert.

pablo (41)

Delivery Insights will begin rolling out globally to Ads Manager in a few weeks, and advertisers will find this feature in the “Delivery” column in the campaign and ad set level, as well as in a standalone tab under “Tools.”

John Hegeman, Facebook's director of engineering for advertising delivery, e-commerce and analytics, said in a statement about Delivery Insights:

“We built our ad system to create as much value as possible for people and businesses. With this in mind, we're focused on helping marketers better understand how our ads auction works, and how they can improve their results, through an education program we're launching this week. In the coming months, we'll also begin introducing new insights in our ads interfaces to help marketers ensure their ads are shown to the people they want to reach.”

How ads get shown on Facebook

The core belief behind Facebook ads is the idea that people should see ads that are relevant to them and ads should deliver as much value as possible.

With more than 3 million advertisers all competing for attention in more than a billion users news feeds, Facebook use what's called an ad auction to deliver ads.

The ad auction pairs individual ads with particular people looking for an appropriate match. The social network's ad auction is designed to determine the best ad to show to a person at a given point in time.

The auction starts with an advertiser submitting a request for an ad to be shown to people. To submit the request, advertisers define their target audience, set an objective for their campaign and place a price bid for each click or conversion. Then, each time there's a chance to show an ad to a person in the advertiser's selected audience, Facebook run an auction to determine whether they should see the ad from that advertiser-or different ad.

“If you're an advertiser and you're getting a chance to show your ad, you're going to take away the opportunity from someone else,” Hegeman explained to Wired.

“The price can be determined based on how much value is being displaced from those other people. An advertiser will only win this placement if their ad really is the most relevant, if it really is the best ad to show to this person at this point in time.”

Factors that determine the winner of an auction

To determine which ad wins the auction, Facebook assigns a total bid value to each ad, which is calculated based on three factors:

  • The advertiser's bid value for the outcome they care about

  • The estimated action rates that the person seeing the ad will lead to the advertiser's desired outcome

  • The ad's quality and its relevance to the person

Here's a little more on each of these three factors:

Bid value

When you create an advert on Facebook you're asked to choose how you'd like to bid: automatically or manually.

Automatic: An automatic bid is one Facebook makes for you on an auction-by-auction basis. The bid is calculated with the goal of spending your entire budget and getting you the most of the result your ad set is optimized for.

Manual: A manual bid is one you make that tells Facebook the maximum amount you'd be willing to pay for the result your ad set is optimized for. For example, if you want website conversions and a you know conversion is worth $10 to you, you could set your bid at $10.

Ad quality and relevance

Facebook estimates how interested a person will be in seeing your ad with measures of its quality and relevance. If your advert has received some negative feedback, that could decrease its value here, likewise, positive reactions and the person has a history of being interested in what you're advertising, that can increase its total value.

To keep tabs on your ad quality and relevance Facebook ads manager has a super-useful relevance score for each ad and also enables to you keep tabs on both positive and negative feedback. The relevance score is displayed as a number between 1 and 10 while positive and negative feedback will be shown as a rating of low, medium or high.

score

You can find the relevance score and positive and negative feedback from within Facebook ads manager.

Estimated action rates

An estimated action rate is a measure of how likely the eligible person is to take the actions required to get you the result you've optimized for. Below is an example Facebook use to explain how estimated action rates work:

If you're running an ad for cooking equipment that's optimized for purchase conversions, you're probably targeting it to people who are interested in cooking. However, cooking equipment's relevance to someone's interests doesn't necessarily mean they're going to purchase cooking equipment. That's why we factor in estimated action rates. From the pool of people interested in cooking, we try to find those that are most likely to complete a purchase.

Winning an auction

In each auction, the ad with the highest total value wins, and winning means the ad gets shown to the person in consideration. This means an ad that's high quality and very relevant can beat an ad that has a higher advertiser bid, but is lower quality and has less relevance.

Facebook Delivery Insights will help advertisers to see how campaigns are performing and understand what they should modify during the campaign to increase their likelihood of success.

Over to you

I hope you found this post useful and would love to hear your thoughts on Facebook Deliver Insights once they're rolled out globally.

I'd also be keen to hear your tips and best practices for creating highly relevant and high-performance ads on Facebook. Share your thoughts in the comments and I'd be excited to join the conversation.

13 Super-Easy Ways to Immediately Improve Your SEO

13 Super-Easy Ways to Immediately Improve Your SEO

What comes to mind when you see the term “SEO“? Where do you focus all your energy when you’re trying to improve your search rankings?

Most people focus a large proportion of their time on “keywords” and not much else.

However, if you’ve been working diligently on keyword optimization but are still not getting the results you want, you may need to consider other factors that affect search engine ranking.

Search engine algorithms not only rate the relevance of your keywords on pages, and in the meta data, in relation to a user’s search terms, but they also evaluate information such as the duration visitors stay on your site, bounce rate, broken links, pages viewed, inbound and outbound links and so on…

Getting users to stay on your website and interact with your content can boost your website’s ranking, and you can do so by improving the user experience and usability of your website.

Using keywords to get visitors to click through to your site is only half the story. If you approach SEO as “optimizing your website for people who use search engines,” the notion of user-friendliness becomes an important factor.

In this article, I’ll look at the various aspects of website usability that impact SEO, how to improve website usability to boost SEO ranking and what to do when there seems to be conflict between usability and SEO “best practice.”

What is website usability?

Website usability encompasses many elements of website design, most of which are also tied to conversion.

Here are a few that can affect search engine ranking:

  • Effectiveness: can users achieve their objectives when they land on your website? e.g. Can they find the information they need, order the products they desire, or contact the company for customer service?

  • Efficiency: adding to effectiveness is efficiency. Besides being able to achieve an objective, how quickly can a user complete a task? If visitors cannot find what they need effectively and efficiently on your website, they’re more likely to navigate away. The shorter time they spend on your website may have a negative impact on the SEO ranking.

  • Learnability: can users learn to navigate your website quickly? Are the calls-to-action that are clickable consistent so visitors know how to interact? When visitors spend too much time trying to figure out how to use your website, they’re spending less time consuming your information or looking at your products. Plus, when they can’t find what they need, it’s likely that they will get frustrated, navigate away and never come back.

  • Memorability: can users re-find your website next time they go onto a search engine? Repeat traffic can help you get a Google ranking boost. Visitors may find your website and then navigate away for a number of reasons. They may remember it later and try to search for it again. Is the keyword associated with that particular search memorable enough so they can find your site again?

  • Error Prevention: certain errors on a website can affect not only user experience but also SEO ranking. e.g. A 404 Page Not Found error, a link that says one thing but displays something else, or a broken link that is no longer valid.

Why is website usability important to SEO?

Search engines reward sites that are user friendly, which means they have high usability. Google favors sites that are not only rich in keywords, but also demonstrate user engagement.

SEO ranking improves when visitors stay on your site longer, view more pages, and repeat their visits. The more user-friendly your site is, the more likely this is going to happen.

Let’s have a look at 13 elements that not only improve usability on your site, but also help increase your SEO ranking:

1. Useful, high quality, relevant content

Dwell time” is the amount of time visitors spend on your website and it can affect SEO ranking.

When you provide useful content, visitors tend to stay longer on your website to consume the information and therefore increase the dwell time.

Based on this research, content between 2,000 – 2,500 words seems to rank the highest in search engine results.

Although word count doesn’t rule the SEO world – nobody will read your stuff if it’s not helpful to them – longer content does give you the opportunity to provide more value, include more keywords, incorporate more outbound links, and of course, get people to spend more time reading to increase dwell time.

Another reason to create highly useful content is that when visitors bookmark your content on Chrome, it will boost your Google ranking.

Content around 2,500 words gets the most Google juice.

2. Page load speed

Both Google and Bing take page-loading speed into account in their ranking algorithm.

Users may leave your site if they have to wait even just an extra few seconds for each page to load. That would hurt your dwell time, increase your bounce rate and reduce the number of pages viewed – all of which could hurt your SEO ranking.

There are many ways to increase page load speed, some of which include using a caching plug-in, making sure the code is clean and streamlined, optimizing image sizes, reducing the number of plug-ins, and minimizing redirects.

Properly optimizing images can help reduce file size and improve load speed.

Research has shown that using good quality images can increase conversion rate. Properly optimizing your images can help you take advantage of using photos to generate empathy, increase trust, and improve a visitor’s experience without hampering load time which could affect your SEO ranking.

3. Image optimization

Besides image file format and sizing, there are other ways to make sure your images are working hard for you on the SEO front.

You can signal relevancy of your content to search engines by using keywords for your image file name, alt tag, title, description and caption.

4. Header tags

Nobody likes running into a wall of text.

Good formatting of your content helps improve the user experience of your website tremendously. It makes readers more willing to spend time to read your content and come back for more, which will ultimately signal your relevancy to search engines.

Proper use of header tags can help break up your content into sections that are easier to read and utilize.

It’s easy to insert header tags in WordPress to improve user experience and boost your SEO ranking.

Search engines also rate keywords in header tags more heavily. By including relevant terms in your header tags, you are also boosting your SEO ranking against those keywords.

5. Outbound links

To make your content more useful and relevant, you can link out to authority sites for more in-depth information your readers can use.

Linking out to well-respected authority sites will not only increase the relevancy of your content and time readers spend on your site, but it is also believed to send trust signals to Google and improve SEO ranking.

However, more is not necessarily better. Too many outbound links can be distracting and make the content hard to get through.

6. Different multimedia

Images, videos, slideshows and audio can help enrich the user experience and allow you to deliver information in a way that is most suited to your ideal site visitors.

They also act as a signal of quality content to search engines… after all, you have put in the work to make your content look good and interactive!

Video marketing has become an increasingly integral element in driving user engagement and conversion. It’s found that websites using videos can achieve a 4.8% higher conversion rate, compared to a 2.9% average on websites that don’t use videos.

Videos get visitors to spend more time on a website and retain more information.

7. Broken links

Who wants to get a 404 page after clicking on a link? Broken links make for bad usability.

Not only that, search engines consider a large number of broken links as a signal of an old, neglected site and this can impact your SEO ranking.

Thankfully, you don’t have to go through every single page on your website and test the links manually. There are many tools and apps to help ensure that your site is free of broken links, such as:

 8. Readability

Even if you have a well-educated audience, they probably don’t want to be deciphering a PhD dissertation every time they visit your website and read your content. You don’t want them to give up reading your content and click away because it’s too difficult to digest.

Making your content easy to read and understand helps make it useful to your readers. Some experts also believe that Google takes readability into account when ranking webpages.

You can use a variety of tools to test your content’s readability, including:

9. Layout and formatting

Proper formatting and a user-friendly layout can help improve user experience and make your content easy to scan and digest, so your readers will stay on your site longer and consume your website’s information.

Formatting can help dramatically improve a webpage’s usability by making the content easy to read:

  • Use font size and typography that are easy to read.

  • Use bold type and colors – sparingly and strategically – to call out important information and make the content easy to scan.

  • Use short paragraphs and ample line spacing in between – nobody likes a wall of text.

  • Use bulleted or numbered lists for clarity.

  • Use techniques such as sliders, tabs, progressive layouts, structured grids, modal windows, rollover elements, accordions and mega drop-down-menus to organize content and add interactivity.

  • Break up content into sections with subheads. Proper use of header tags that include keywords also helps boost SEO ranking.

10. Contact us page

According to this Google document (p.98), websites that have sufficient contact information are considered to be more trust-worthy and therefore may rank higher by search engines.

Including a Contact Us page on your website and putting the link in the navigation not only makes for good user experience (especially if you have an ecommerce site) but can also potentially earn you some Google juice.

It’s found that a well-designed contact form increases user participation in a company’s online presence. It also helps generate new business opportunities, capture new leads, improve customer service, and more.

11. Site architecture and navigation

When visitors can’t find what they need on a website right away, they most likely leave the site and this contributes to high bounce rate, low dwell time and low number of pages viewed.

A well-thought-out site architecture reflected in clear navigation is critical in helping visitors find what they want on your site, accomplish their goals and come back repeatedly (repeated visits can improve SEO ranking.)

A “flat” site architecture not only makes content easier to find, it can also help improve SEO ranking as it surfaces links of all critical pages making it easier for search engines to crawl the entire site.

12. Mobile optimization

As of April 2015, Google has started to penalize sites that are not mobile optimized by bumping down their search engine ranking.

More and more users are consuming content on mobile devices, and not being mobile optimized is going to affect user experience and conversion.

It is particularly important for B2B marketers. Research has shown that 77 percent of executives use their smartphone to research a product or service for their business.

Business executives use mobile devices to research products and services for their businesses.

It’s not just for B2B websites either. Companies like Yelp that act as search directories connecting consumers to businesses found that 55% of all searches comes from mobile devices.

If your website has been around for a while, it’s time to test it to make sure it’s compliant.

Number of users accessing the Internet via mobile devices has surpassed the number using desktop.

13. Social sharing

The number of Facebook shares, Tweets, Pinterest pins and other social media mentions can influence SEO rankings.

Installing social sharing buttons on your website not only makes it easy for users to share your content, and thereby improve user experience, it can also help you rank higher on searches.

Social sharing also helps drive purchasing behavior: Nearly 4 in 10 Facebook users report they have gone from liking, sharing or commenting on an item to actually buying it, while 43% of social media users have purchased a product after sharing or liking it on Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter.

In this case study, a pest control company boosted organic traffic by 15% in just 2 weeks after running a campaign aimed to increase social sharing.

Peep Laja managed to get over 40,000 unique visits to his site in month number one, having most of the traffic generated through social media sharing.

To get you started, here are a few social share button plug-ins to try:

Resolving the conflict between usability and SEO “best practice”

In most cases, elements that contribute to good usability also result in good search engine rankings. However, there are instances when conflict my occur:

  • Many content creators “stuff” keywords onto a page to get SEO juice, but that could undermine the readability and user experience of the content.

  • The attempt to get keywords into an article can affect the vocabulary choice of the writer, sometimes making content hard to comprehend.

  • Outbound links can be good for SEO, but too many of them can be distracting and if they are not directly related to the topic at hand, it can impact the reader’s experience.

  • Overloading footers that contain every single page on the site may help with SEO, but it also creates confusion when a visitor is trying to look for certain key pages.

Sometimes, particularly in the short term, you may have to make a trade-off between more traffic from SEO and optimal user experience.

Don’t get lured into just comparing numbers – such as visitor numbers and page views. Traffic from SEO may give you higher numbers in the short term, but better user experience can often result in higher conversions.

In the long run, with an eye on conversion and ultimately revenue, it’s often a smart move to prioritize user experience instead of milking every last SEO trick.
